ILLBIENT SCENE OF THE 1990’s
Legend of the New York underground illibient scene. Influencer before influencers.
The first release by Totally Killing It Productions was the Sub Dub project. Sub Dub formed with the chance meeting of Raz Mesinai (Badawi) and John Ward (JDub) in a downtown Manhattan record store. Between 1992 and 1998, Sub Dub released two EPs on Totally Killing It Productions label, an album for Instinct and for Asphodel Records as well as various tracks and remixes on Wordsound, Axiom, Island and Knitting Factory Records. The duo was known for their live shows playing their first gig at the NASA rave, many shows at The Cooler, NYC and also touring Europe and the US West Coast before breaking up in 1998. Instrumental in the formative Illbient scene in New York, Sub Dub’s House music was also in heavy rotation at clubs like Limelight and Sound Factory.

“Though no electronic act bested the Orb at creating a satisfying fusion of ambient music and dub, Sub Dub came the closest with its blend of studio production and live instrumentation.”
